Helived at Halfway Bank, Shields Road, Newcastle upon Tyen and  atWallsend.  His wife died there on 16th January 1832.  He died atLinsey House, London on 2nd February 1851, aged 79. Balston gives date of death as 29th. Feb. 1851. bet 1776-1782 - 1837 Richard MARTIN Richard 1778  by trade a tanner, served in the Army for 29years, of which 22 years was in the 1st (or Grenadier) Regimentof Foot guards.  He was Quarter Master Sergeant and served inthe Pennisular War and at the Battle of Waterloo.    1783 - 1879 Ann MARTIN 96 96 Married an ATKINSON and kept house for John MARTIN 1833-1851 Had one daughter who married Henry WARREN, Pres. of Water colourSociety 1839-1873 1782 - 1838 Jonathan MARTIN 56 56 Jonathan Martin 1782.  Tanner by trade;  married twice, had oneson Richard who died 13th August 1838, London. Lived at BishopAuckland, Darlington and Norton.  Pressed into Navy ,servingunder Nelson and being made a Captain in charge of one ofNelson's prize ships. Wrote life story before he becamereligious fanatic.  Imprisoned in York before trial aftersetting fire to York Minster in January 1829 and causing £50,000of damage. Found to be insane and sent to Bedlam Asylum ,Londonwhere he died in May 1838. Hodgson's History of Northumberland, the parish of  Whitfield and under Charities of Whitfield itstates " Thos. Martin left £10  by will to the poor of theparish" which was still payable by Mr. Ord  when  Hodgson wrotehis history in 1840. A footnote says "Thomas Martin was probablya relation of Matthew Martin,  who resided in this parish, andwas ancestor of Jonathan, the unfortunate  burner of YorkCathedral, and of John, the celebrated painter and engraver, beside William, and other brothers"  1814 - 1838 Richard MARTIN 24 24 A tanner by trade, Jonathan Martin was twice married and livedat Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Norton.  He was pressed intothe Navy and served under Nelson, being made a captain of the fo'castle in  one of Nelson's prize ships. He wrote his life story beforebecoming a religious fanatic and after several warnings set fireto York Minster, causing £50,000 of damage.  He was found to beinsane and eventually died in the Bedlam Asylum in May 1838after a confinement of nine years. 1789 - 1854 John MARTIN 64 64 Prince Leopold, later King of the Belgians, appointed John"Historical Lanscape Painter to the Princess Charlotte andPrince Leopold" in 1817 and awarded him the order of Knight ofthe Order of Leopold in 1833. 1780 - 1858 Susan GARRETT 78 78 I have also been in touch with Christopher Ralph, who is adescendant ofJames Turner Garrett an older brother of Susan Garrett ofCrondall,Hampshire who married John Martin, re Balston's statement that asister ofSusan Garrett was married to  Wilson the Draper.Christopher wrote in one Email "Susannah was the daughter ofGeorge & MaryGarrett, and one of four daughters. The youngest of these,Elizabeth, remained single in Crondall all her life. The next youngest wasSarah, whowas the village schoolmistress, and remained single. The onlyother daughterwas Mary (b 1784), and she must be the one I believe who marriedWilson andlived I think on the Isle of Man.It's all very interesting. The Garretts seem to have been anenterprisingfamily. "The Misses Garrett" were mentioned in one of the localhistories ofCrondall, as I recall, in connection with local archaeology inthe early19th century. I assume these would be Elizabeth and Sarah. TheirbrotherJames became the parish clerk, after starting out as acarpenter. Possiblythe Martins had some influence in this."In a second mail he says"The Garretts first appeared in the parish in 1776 when my 3rdgtgrandfatherJames Turner Garrett was christened, he being Susan[na]'s olderbrother. Anolder child of the family of George & Mary Garrett had been bornin nearbySouth Warnborough 18 months earlier, but I have not been able tofind anymarriage for George and Mary. Mary would have been about 27 in1774 whenJohn was born, so it seems likely that there were older childrenof theunion born elsewhere. There is circumstantial evidence possiblylinking theGarretts with the Portsmouth area in earlier generations. You wrote of Susan: "Alan Nelson informed me [she] was named on30th July1780 and received into the church at Crondall on 22nd November1780 aged 18weeks". Indeed 30th July 1780 is the correct date for George andMary'sdaughter Susanna, and probably she was baptised privately athome, and latertaken to church as stated. I expect you are aware of theheadstone on whichher dates appear, a photograph of which is located athttp://www.flickr.eom/photos/51162504@NOO/1250891861 . Herbirthdate appearsto have been either 27 of June or 27 July 1780. Either way itseems toidentify her neatly with George and Mary Garrett's daughter;Balston'sinformation to the contrary is therefore a puzzle." 1810 - 1813 William Fenwick MARTIN 3 3 William Fenwick Martin 1810-1813 born 21.8.1810, baptised 14.4.1811 at St. Mary, St. Marylebone Road, London.  Father John, Mother Susan Family Search website - England Births and Christenings 1538-1975. Henry spent much of his career in America, living according to the census from about 1822 to 1860 in Phildelphia where he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy.  It is possible he was in America as early as 1815 because a view of the Washington Monument was engraved about tht time from a drawing by H. Warren.  source www.askart.com
